This simple lighting setup explodes video quality

Hey everyone,

I’ve mentioned this before, but it's worth repeating: having a good studio setup is key for us creators because it really improves the quality and look of your videos.

A proper studio doesn't just make things look better, it also makes our videos clearer and more engaging.

This can help draw in more viewers and keep them watching longer - we like that, right?

So today, I want to break down:

  • The lighting setup I'm using right now.

  • And why it works so well.

Let's dive in!

🌟 My Lighting Setup

I use a three-point lighting setup, which is special because it uses three lights to create a well-balanced and professional look.

It’s an easy way to get a good looking scene, and I really like it for that reason.

BTW, I still use the entry-level lights I bought when starting out.

You don’t always need the latest and greatest to achieve fantastic results.

💡 Key Light

The key light is undoubtedly the most crucial light in the setup, primarily used to light the subject.

It should be positioned at a 45-degree angle to the subject to create a balanced mix of light and shadow.

I currently use a Godox SL100D as my key light.

🌈 Rim Light

The rim light, sometimes called the backlight or hair light, is used to outline the subject, separating them from the background and enhancing depth.

It should be positioned behind the subject, usually opposite the key light, to create a subtle highlight around the edges.

This helps the subject stand out visually and pop from the background.

I use the Godox 60w as my rim light.

🔆 Fill Light

The fill light softens and lightens the shadows on the subject caused by the key light.

It should be positioned on the opposite side of the key light, at a lower intensity, to balance the lighting and making the shadows less harsh.

If you prefer a more contrasting look, then this light isn’t necessary, but I like to include it in my setup to create a more inviting atmosphere.

I often use this cheap light tube as my fill light.

🚀 Level Up

For the past five months, I’ve been working on a masterclass on how to light and create your perfect social media space.

It’s one of the most personal and comprehensive projects I’ve ever undertaken.

With almost 50 different lessons and hours of content, we dive deep into lighting techniques, color theory, set and background design, camera and audio settings, and much more.

It’s finally ready and will go live next week, and I can’t describe how excited I am to share this with you.

Expect a few extra emails next week, all filled with tips and tricks!

Catch you guys in the next one!
