Why Instagram Might Be Ruining Photography?

Why Instagram Might Be Ruining Photography?

šŸ‘‹ Hey everyone,

Recently, I had a chat with a photographer friend who argued that Instagram is massively transforming photography, especially landscapes ā€“ and not always for the better.

This talk changed my photo game and it made me wonder if we, as a community, are maybe facing a creativity crisis?

So, today we're talking about:

  • The Instagram effect on photography - has it ruined it?

  • How to escape that same-old Instagram trap.

  • A challenge that significantly improved my photo skills.

Let's dive in!

šŸ§© The Instagram Puzzle

Every day, tons of epic shots flood Instagram, right? This overflow makes it super tempting to copy those popular photos, especially at iconic spots.

Here's a thought, though: my friend argues that Instagram is making us all kinda... samey? Especially in landscape photography.

It seems like everyone is just recreating the same photos, without any personal creativity or new twists ā€“ and honestly, heā€™s on to something, and it's a bit disappointing.

In Iceland, where I come from, itā€™s typical for photographers to chase after that one ā€œInsta-famousā€ shot. Iā€™ve been guilty of this many times.

I mean, haven't we all seen the exact same photos thousands of times, just captured by different photographers?

Still, I find myself only partly agreeing with my buddy. Sure, Instagram has us all hunting for likes with similar types of pictures. However, it also opens up the world of photography to so many more people, inspiring countless individuals to pick up a camera.

I'm definitely one of those who were drawn into photography by IG, and I truly believe it just boils down to how we choose to use this platform.

Do you agree?

šŸ•ŗ Finding Your Own Style

I think the issue isnā€™t Instagram itself, but how we approach it. We don't have to copy every viral photo. Hereā€™s my advice:

  • Look for Fresh Angles: Visit those popular spots, but find your own twist. A few steps to the side could reveal something entirely new.

  • Play with Light and Seasons: The same place can look totally different under new conditions ā€“ that's the magic we're after.

  • Mix Inspiration with Your Own Style: Sure, get inspired, but then add your own touch.

  • Connect and Team Up: Instagram is more than a feed ā€“ it's a community. Chat, meet up, collaborate. Let's create something sick together ā€“ hit me up with a DM!

Remember, itā€™s okay to mimic others, especially to learn. But once youā€™re comfortable, challenge yourself to discover your own style.

Trust me, itā€™s incredibly rewarding.

šŸ’« My Challenge and a lilā€™ Nudge

The truth is, this conversation inspired me to challenge myself to find new angles, even in the well-known spots. And you know, it honestly brought back my passion for photography.

I view Instagram as a playground, not as a limitation. It's there to inspire us to push boundaries and explore new possibilities, not to hold us back.

Heck, Iā€™m feeling a bi poetic šŸ˜‚. But seriously, my friends, thereā€™s nothing like the thrill of nailing that one-of-a-kind shot.

So, letā€™s get out and capture some magic. Iā€™m excited to see what unique perspectives you guys bring! Feel free to tag me in your pics so I can see them šŸ˜„.

Catch you next time!

Best,
ArnĆŗlfur
